Where Everything Goes Quiet
Where Everything Goes Quiet
Some places seem to absorb sound.
Not literally, of course. The waves are still moving. The wind is still there. But something changes. The constant background noise of everyday life softens, and for a few moments you're left with nothing but the horizon and your own thoughts.
This painting was inspired by one of those moments on the East Lothian coast. The sea was calm, the colours muted, and everything felt gentler somehow. The kind of afternoon where you stop checking the time, stop thinking about the next thing on the list, and simply stand still.
Where Everything Went Quiet is a painting about space, stillness and breathing room. The layered blues, soft blush tones and shifting horizon were built gradually, allowing each layer to settle before the next arrived. As the light changes throughout the day, different parts of the painting emerge, creating a subtle sense of movement within the calm.
It's a piece for quiet corners, reading chairs and slower mornings. A reminder that not every moment needs to be filled.
I painted this during a period when life felt particularly busy. Returning to the studio and working on this canvas became a way of finding stillness again. I think that feeling found its way into the painting.
