I’m Joanna Srokol, an East Lothian-based artist creating atmospheric mixed-media paintings shaped by the changing light, open skies and rugged beauty of the Scottish coast.
My work is made for people who want their homes to feel calmer, more personal and connected to the places that restore them.

THE SEA IS WHERE THE PAINTINGS BEGIN
My work often begins with a walk.
Along Gullane Beach. Through the dunes at Yellowcraig. Beside the shifting shoreline and wide skies of East Lothian.
I don’t try to make an exact record of those places. I paint what remains afterwards: a particular light, an unexpected line of colour or the feeling of space returning after a crowded week.
Back in the studio, I work intuitively with acrylic, ink, pastel, oil stick and textile. I build, scrape back and layer the surface until something begins to settle.
I’m drawn to the contrast between softness and ruggedness: quiet horizons beside restless marks, muted coastal colours interrupted by flashes of something unexpected.
These are not simply paintings of the coast. They are paintings about what the coast allows us to feel.
THE LIFE BEHIND THE PAINTINGS
I grew up in Poland and now live and work on Scotland’s East Coast.
Alongside my studio practice, I teach Art and Design—a role that keeps me curious and reminds me that meaningful work is built through looking, trying, adjusting and returning.
Motherhood has made me notice time differently: the small pauses, our changing identities and the fragments of space in which creativity survives.
My paintings are made within a full life, not apart from it. Perhaps that is why I’m so drawn to moments of stillness and to the places that allow us to breathe more deeply.
MADE TO LIVE WITH
An original painting should do more than fill a wall. It should change the way a room feels—and become part of the life unfolding around it.
My paintings bring movement, texture and a quiet presence into a space. Layered marks and subtle shifts in colour reveal themselves differently as the natural light changes throughout the day.
Each original is one of a kind. I also create bespoke paintings for private collectors and interior designers, shaped around a particular space, palette, landscape or feeling.
