The Morning After the Hard Night
The Morning After the Hard Night
The sea doesn't know what kind of night you had. It just shows up with the light anyway.
There are walks you take because everything is fine and you want to celebrate that. And there are walks you take because everything is not fine and you need something bigger than yourself to stand next to for a while.
This painting is from the second kind. The dark forms of the coastline, the single point of warm gold light, the vast sky above it all — this is what the East Lothian shore looks like when you arrive depleted and it holds you anyway.
The Morning After the Hard Night brings drama and resolution in the same breath. The bold dark forms are grounded by that single luminous mark of warmth — it is a painting about survival in the most beautiful sense. It works in a bedroom, a reading corner, or anywhere you want to feel held rather than decorated.
I painted this after a week I don't want to repeat. The walk happened first, and then the painting had to happen because there was no other way to finish processing it. That's what this collection is, really — processed walks.
