The Distance Between Us and the Horizon
The Distance Between Us and the Horizon
There's always more sky than you expect. And it always helps.
This painting came from a walk where the horizon felt very far away — in the best possible sense. Standing on the East Lothian coast with the sea stretching out ahead, the distance felt like something you could breathe into. Not absence. Possibility.
The painting holds that stretch. Blues deepening toward the waterline, the sky holding more space than anything else. It's about what happens when you finally look up and out.
This is a painting that opens a wall. The horizontal composition draws the eye outward, creating a sense of space even in smaller rooms. The soft blues and muted pinks don't demand attention — they reward it. You'll notice different things in different light.
I painted this during a period when I needed to remember that the horizon is always there, even when you can't see it. That's the thing about the sea — it doesn't change to suit your mood. It just keeps going.
